The Mayo Clinic Diet The Mayo Clinic Diet is an eating plan that is high protein, high fat and low carbohydrate. Because it is also low in calories, you only stay on the diet for three days a week and eat sensibly the rest of the time. The Mayo Clinic diet can lead to rapid weight loss if followed correctly. Although there are several versions of the Mayo Clinic diet, the most popular one includes eating a half of a grapefruit at every meal. Recent research suggests that eating grapefruit before or with a meal can help you lose weight. Some people say it is because there are chemicals in the grapefruit that encourage weightloss while others suggest that it is simply a good way to fill up for a negligible amount of calories. However grapefruit works, it seems to do the trick. Also, increased amounts of protein are important in weight loss and the Mayo Clinic diet includes plenty of protein. Breakfast is the ½ grapefruit with 2 eggs and two slices of bacon, while lunch and dinner features lots of veggies and a serving of meat, both of which can be cooked in butter, along with the grapefruit. You can end the day with a cup of tomato juice or skim milk if you want, but it is not necessary. This program is very low calorie. If you stay on it for more than a few days at a time, it will not only be difficult to sustain but will also depress your metabolism. . Furthermore, all the protein and fat helps you feel full, keeping you relatively hunger free for the few days that you are on the diet, however, as you become more hungry over the course of a week or longer, if you choose to stay on the diet that long, the fat and protein will not be able to mask your hunger. Used for a few days at a time however, the Mayo Clinic diet can help you achieve rapid weight loss. Note: The Mayo Clinic Diet is not endorsed by the "Mayo Clinic."
